Tonight I'm being forced to watch The Human Centipede by someone who I care for very deeply (I may have to rethink that), but the new Maniac is certainly next on my list.
And I make it a point to review every single film I watch to force myself to think about how movies are made and how they impact their audience, so you'll be seeing something soon and I can discuss it from a much more informed angle. I'll be reading YOUR review of Maniac immediately after (I don't wanna read it before and accidentally crib anything you say) and I can say I'm very excited. As you have probably noticed, horror is kind of my thing.Brennanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15399713449347559869noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633480297352890314.post-56501604184554117502014-06-06T20:56:32.075-11:002014-06-06T20:56:32.075-11:00Thank you. Some people swear by it, but I thought it was a little too slow (some would argue atmospheric, and I couldn't argue back) and there are some plausibility issues, although not insuperable ones.

Maniac '13 (or '12, or whatever) hit me just the right way. I reviewed it when it came out on VOD last year (I guess my invitation to Cannes got lost in the mail), but I think I'm one of the few people who had the reaction to it I did. My impression is that most people thought it was a very serious movie, including Franck Khalfoun and Alexandre Aja themselves, while I read it as a nearly absurdist black comedy. If it does wind up legitimately unnerving at turns, my expectation that it would be as sickening as Lucky McKee's The Woman (which is amazing but a difficult watch). Yet Maniac wound up, to my eye, being very similar to You're Next in a lot of ways, which is to say, not terribly serious at all.

Will you be writing it up? I'm interested in seeing your take; just a glance at your work reveals that you're at least 10,000% (actual math) more the slasher guru than I am!Hunter Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925220178171355473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633480297352890314.post-38168801585188830382014-06-06T19:40:01.130-11:002014-06-06T19:40:01.130-11:00Weirdly (and tangentially) enough, I stumbled acro...Weirdly (and tangentially) enough, I stumbled across this review after just having watched the 1980 Maniac for the first time. In fact, I watched it tonight. I'm looking forward to catching the Elijah Wood remake because I've heard great things. Your little shoutout was the final brick in the wall and I'm gonna have to check it out as soon as I can. I'm very excited because to you it was clearly an improvement on the original and, despite its flaws, I really enjoyed the original for its foolhardy gusto. So a film with the same material that elevates it even higher is an A+ in my book.
And I have to say I'm glad you liked You're Next, even though my unparalleled enthusiasm for the movie isn't quite matched by yourself. There are a lot of people who don't see the comedy in the film, which is probably why it didn't do great at the box office (that and its August release date - gross), but I adore what the film is doing and I'm incredibly biased toward any film that empowers women.
Anyway, I'm having a great time reading through your reviews! Good work on the blog, it's really something to be proud of!Brennanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15399713449347559869noreply@blogger.com
