But if you ever do revisit it (maybe by skipping through the really, really bad part, which is everything before the elevator), stick till the end, and you'll be floored by how similar Dark Star's highly-conceptual climax is to Adams, as well as to Doug Naylor and Rob Grant. It's erudite yet gently brutal--in other words, very, very British.

Anyway, I hope it wasn't a first date.

As for Carpenter, he's a fun choice for anybody, because:

1)Even if I have few illusions I'll actually meet my challenge to myself to finish all of it before Halloween, his filmography is relatively short.
2)Even if there's one possible stumbling block, Carpenter's movies are all readily available. (I mean, I own eight of them.)
3)Even if there might be one or two movies that are even worse than Dark Star, his filmography is nonetheless consistently good.
4)Even if Dark Star represents a very shaky start, Carpenter gets good quickly.
and
5)People actually care about JC!

I had been thinking about doing a De Palma retrospective (heck, I've already got two down), but then realized I couldn't just start with Sisters. Rather, due diligence demands sitting through his first half decade and (thus) about five no-budget drama-comedies that are hard to find and I have little interest watching, anyway.

Looking forward to Giant Claw! I suppose it best for Terror Train to come right after Halloween (the movie, not October 31), which should be done well before the end of the week.

P.S. yes, you are a notorious completist. How many Saw movies did you watch? Possibly more than they actually made.Hunter Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925220178171355473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633480297352890314.post-89719172345234577222015-10-12T18:04:46.122-11:002015-10-12T18:04:46.122-11:00How dare you bring Douglas Adams into this!
I bro...How dare you bring Douglas Adams into this!

I brought this movie along with me on a date once. Needless to say, I am not currently together with that person (although Sergio just made his way through Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers with me, so he's clearly made of sterner stuff).

Dark Star is one of the only movies that I turned off halfway through. I'm a notorious completionist, but I just couldn't muster the strength. It sounds like a full rewatch might be obligatory at some point. But that point is veeeeeeery far in the future.

All things said, I am excited for you to continue exploring Carpenter's filmography! I haven't seen nearly as much as I should have, and this might give me the impetus to catch up. Of course, once I'm finished with the thousand features I'm currently drowning in thanks to October. Look for my Giant Claw review on Wednesday!Brennanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15399713449347559869noreply@blogger.com
