You can watch decapitations all damn day and not feel a thing because it's so over the top. But anything even remotely minor (the staple remover thing was also a no-no) is killer. To date the most affecting gore sequence I have ever seen is the hangnail scene from Black Swan.

It's the little things.Brennanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15399713449347559869noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633480297352890314.post-73146351935065435182014-11-18T15:24:41.061-11:002014-11-18T15:24:41.061-11:00That was pretty great. I can watch guys get pickaxed in the face all day but give me relatively minor injuries that are very minimal exaggerations of the kind of crap I accidentally do to myself all the time? Squeam.

I can see your point, though I thought Tim's personal doom of almost certainly spending a lifetime in prison and/or a mental ward was acceptably terrible. (Personally, I fear long-term imprisonment far more than death.) I guess he could've gotten eaten too, and that would be even worse, but I liked the Parallelism Show they were putting on throughout.

Now, I am surprised they didn't go for the obvious (?) super-twist and have their entire lives be mirror-driven delusions... but this may have been a bit beyond the pale.Hunter Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925220178171355473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633480297352890314.post-48166387683825373552014-11-18T15:14:49.026-11:002014-11-18T15:14:49.026-11:00SPOILERS

I'm absolutely fine with her dying - it was inevitable. This is horror. Death is an important part of the genre, or so I've been told. But all in all it just wasn't as dynamic as I was hoping. And they definitely tipped their hand too soon on the "is she crazy?" element.

But all in all I really enjoyed the film. Especially the apple/light bulb gag. The more you know!

As for Oculus, one thing I meant to mention is that it took Flanagan like seven years to get it made because he refused to make it found-footage. So I want to give him a hug, maybe even make out a little.

I was hoping I'd get a chance to ask you what you found unpalatable about the ending, have a nice spoiler discussion... I can't find real flaw in it except perhaps it's a little jarring that they go back in the house though they never left the house in the first place and I've gone cross-eyed.Hunter Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925220178171355473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633480297352890314.post-42849479419217957872014-11-18T11:48:03.225-11:002014-11-18T11:48:03.225-11:00I gotta say, it's fun to be nasty, isn't i...I gotta say, it's fun to be nasty, isn't it? The Quiet Ones inspires the best kind of ire in every review I've read. I'm delighted you got a kick out of Oculus though! I truly did enjoy it, though I felt like it unraveled a little too far in the third act.

Thanks for the shoutout!Brennanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15399713449347559869noreply@blogger.com
