I should pick up on Sargent, I've liked what I've seen from him as a director in the 70s, and I don't even really dislike Jaws: The Revenge, certainly not the way I'm supposed to. Maybe I'll spin White Lightning, at some point I probably ought to watch one movie about Burt Reynolds driving a car, as it seems such things constitute a legitimate movement.

He did a telefilm about the Mercury Theatre WotW broadcast, too, that sounds neat.Hunter Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925220178171355473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633480297352890314.post-75546731598246865202022-10-05T00:20:49.733-11:002022-10-05T00:20:49.733-11:00My impression of Manhattan, at least, was "wh...My impression of Manhattan, at least, was "what if we stuffed ten times as many people into downtown Pittsburgh and also downtown Pittsburgh was practically the entire island?" and I found it draining. For all that, the general tenor of the populace was possibly more polite and pleasant. I don't think I ever took the subway, though. Public transit confuses and frightens me (I'm from the South), plus I was a little mystified why people don't just walk places anyway, as unless you're going north-south across the island entirely it's like two miles to literally almost anywhere you (at least I) ever wanted to go.Hunter Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925220178171355473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633480297352890314.post-65834731955131752022022-10-03T09:29:24.007-11:002022-10-03T09:29:24.007-11:00p.s. BTW, I live in NYC ("Naw Yuk Shitty"...p.s. BTW, I live in NYC ("Naw Yuk Shitty") and I'm employed in very much the same type of environment as depicted in the film. Apart from very minor differences, I'd attest that what you see in the movie is not just a 'snapshot in time'. The "background aggro" permeating the city still throbs. The frustrating way the city runs, is unchanged. Superficially, things may *look* a little different today, but believe-you-me, the people and the system are just as bad as ever. It's a Kitty Genovese environment. Dysfunctional working men haven't been improved by post-modernism or sensitivity-awareness-training. Certainly, the transit system itself doesn't run any better now than it did then.

Also: the train system itself doesn't look any better than what you see in the flick. I'm glad Sargent did not insert any obligatory shots of spacious, elegant, Grand Central station crowds. That would have detracted from the reality of the tunnels and cars which are just as cramped and claustrophobic as depicted.

Anyway. Long live Caz Dolowitz! As for PelhamOneTwoThree ...it is not too much to say that it is my #1 favorite thriller of all time. That's how high I rate it. It's an extraordinary remark to make, about any one film. But there really is nothing else to compare. As fine as so many other thrillers are (British and French examples included) nothing touches so many points of excellence as does Pelham. The baby-carriage moment still makes me leap out of my seat, every time. For years, I've had the soundtrack on my audio player.
