(It does, after all, start with The Thanos Quest not The Warlock Quest.) Maybe it's because I like the follow-up, Infinity War, way more than most (I would easily put it in a top 10 superhero books I've ever read) and so I think of Warlock as the protagonist of the whole trilogy with the (fun, but obviously much weaker, and prone to making up religious beliefs for established characters out of basically whole cloth) Infinity Crusade.Hunter Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925220178171355473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633480297352890314.post-1385028019475722792021-08-12T06:03:09.767-11:002021-08-12T06:03:09.767-11:00Solo was often dark and weird, but there was never...Solo was often dark and weird, but there was never a situation where you had a superhero in a shining suit with a glowing lasso fighting a catlady in the dark. Maybe they were going for some kind of neon dance club look? Either way, a far bigger mistake.

I actually spent most of the movie assuming that Barbara's wish split Diana's power between the two of them, so Diana was lessened while Barbara was made more. It was not immediately apparent that Steve was the leech. Which just goes to make Cheetah ever more ambiguous.

They've killed before, but I guess she killed him on camera, broadcast around the world. What she did was bad for the brand, and a bad influence for other vigilantes. I also think that they feel that in some weird way more was expected of Diana because of her divinity. And they wanted to tell a story about some discord in the Trinity, and these days that overrides everything else. I guess it always did, but to a lesser extent.

Infinity Gauntlet didn't really need a protagonists though. Yes, Adam Warlock was the hero in the end, but the story was really about Thanos. Think about it, what's the last panel that everybody always thinks about? Thanos in his crappy smock, sitting around on his farm. And really, because they dramatically ramped down the power levels involved (the only stargod we've seen in the MCU is Ego), it could actually make sense for the regular heroes with a bit of a power-up to win. But Cheetah is probably the biggest miss, yeah. I mean, I enjoy comics faithfulness as much as anybody, but I wouldn't have seen too many problems with just giving her cheetah-themed clothes and calling it a day. I feels like it got noted, and maybe even reshot, because they really awkwardly transition her into a cat-person, and if that was the way Jenkins wanted to take it, I assume she'd have just had her metamorphosizing throughout the film, which would've been cool.

I'll be very honest and admit that due to Barbara getting powers and Diana losing hers, I thought for the first hour, maybe more, that Barbara's wish-price was stealing them from Diana. Which would be evil what with all the supervillainy afoot and her obvious unworthiness, etc. That's where I assumed they were going with it. Bless this mess, huh?

I'm still not sure why Superman and Batman flipped out when Wonder Woman killed Lord. Sure, not the direction I'd have taken Lord's character (certainly not exactly the same). Maybe they'd already retconned it, but Superman executed dudes once, and their respective codes don't prevent them from being *friends* with killers.

I would love to see the JLI--I think. I dunno, I don't always get exactly what I wish for when I wish for adaptations of specific stories and concepts. ("Let's adapt Infinity Gauntlet without its protagonist, it'll make four billion dollars," said Kevin Feige, and the fucker was right!)Hunter Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10925220178171355473noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4633480297352890314.post-3985481933902749572021-08-11T07:52:29.220-11:002021-08-11T07:52:29.220-11:00My biggest problems with this movie all revolve ar...My biggest problems with this movie all revolve around Cheetah. There's just some bizarre decisions on that path, like they're struggling between making her misunderstood or just bad. But the worst part is how the big CGI battle at the end might be the worst-lit thing that's been done in a major motion picture. It's like they blew the CGI budget already and so they decided to just have the last fight be in the dark so that you don't notice the flaws. And when that's the big final battle in your $200 million superhero movie, you've got problems.

At least they didn't kill Max Lord, which allows me to think that some sort of Superbuddies-style future is in store for him, even if the comics closed that door long ago.
